Free Entry to Westonbirt Arboretum

posted 31 Dec 2016, 06:37 by Owain Cole

Once again we are delighted to offer all our guests free entry to Westonbirt Arboretum during their stay with us in 2017. With its new treetop walkway / sky bridge linking the old and new sections of the park, acres of dog friendly woodland, eco visitor centre, and delightful cafe, we would recommend you spend a day there exploring its hidden sculptures and majestic vistas, before enjoying a relaxing soak in our cottage's roll top baths, ready for an evening out in town.

Malmesbury Carnival

posted 8 Jun 2016, 08:29 by Owain Cole   [ updated 31 Dec 2016, 11:41 ]

We are all very much looking forward to the Malmesbury Carnival, with a series of events and attractions throughout the summer months in Malmesbury. Last year we especially enjoyed the open gardens, and the grand finale of the parade of floats and costumed walkers through the streets. All the carnival events in town are within easy walking distance of our cottages.

Our guests have continued to enjoy nearby Westonbirt Arboretum with its newly opened 'sky bridge' which crosses the valley: providing a spectacular unique view of the area. We give all of our cottage guests  free passes to the Arboretum during their stay as it is such a lovely area to walk around. There is also an excellent cafe!

Introducing The Coach House

We are very excited that our newly-renovated, dog-friendly cottage The Coach House is now open, and we welcomed our first guests (for WOMAD weekend in Malmesbury) today. We are absolutely delighted with the cottage, which promises to be a very special place to stay. The cottage is beautifully furnished and equipped, and has its own private garden. The Coach House is already proving very popular, so do take a look at our availability calendar! Further photos will be added to our website soon, but please do contact us in the meantime if you have any questions at all.

The Coach House - almost there!

We are so excited that our new cottage, The Coach House, is nearing completion.  This week, the garden is being landscaped, the finishing touches are being made to the kitchen and bathroom, and the beautiful stone floor tiles will be laid.  We've had several bookings already for the summer season, including several from dog-owners keen to enjoy a 5 star Cotswold cottage holiday with their pets, a rare find it seems!  Photographs will be appearing on the website shortly, but please contact us in the meantime with any enquiries.

Wedding Night Guests and the Garden

posted 19 Aug 2014, 05:36 by Owain Cole   [ updated 19 Aug 2014, 05:36 ]

We have been very pleased to host a number of guests staying in the cottage for their wedding nights and a short minimoon before they jet off to somewhere warmer recently. We normally pop in a bottle of something special when guests let us know they have a special occasion. Jenny also makes a good birthday cake if you give her enough warning!

The flowers in the garden are out, and we appear to have a family of rabbits that can be seen nibbling at our lawn on most mornings. I've also seen a squirrel or two: I wonder if they are burying nuts for the winter. I'm also hoping that the fruit on our fig tree ripens soon. We normally have a glut and we are very happy if our guests take a few to enjoy - fresh figs are not that common in England.

August is Carnival time in Malmesbury, where there are shows, talks, sing-a-longs, open gardens, a street carnival and lots more. It's such a lovely area to visit with so many things to see and do! Do let us know if you want to visit the area now that the schools are going back, and the gardens, country houses are less busy.

5 Star Gold Again!

posted 18 Oct 2013, 05:37 by Jenny Cole

We have just received the results of our recent inspection by Visit England, and have received a 5 Star Gold Award for the third successive year.  Our overall score was 94%, with a top score of 100% for cleanliness. The inspector noted in his report that the cottage is "a very well presented and sympathetically converted property".  We are of course delighted with this result, which reflects the effort which goes into ensuring that the cottage offers a standard of accommodation which is second to none.

We are fully booked until mid-November, but then have some availability for winter short breaks and week long stays - come along and see us for yourself!

Time to put your feet up!

We love receiving feedback from our guests, and always try to implement your suggestions and ideas for the cottage.  Several guests have suggested that it would be nice to have somewhere to put one's feet up in the living area, so we are delighted with our new gorgeously upholstered footstool  in Cervino Red Nut fabric, to match the curtains, blinds and cushions in The Stables.  If an excuse was needed to stay in and avoid the unseasonally chilly weather, with a cup of tea and a slice of homemade cake, this is it!

Cream tea for two!

posted 1 Mar 2013, 05:12 by Jenny Cole   [ updated 8 Oct 2013, 07:10 by Owain Cole ]

Having just spent a lovely morning sinking into a gorgeously squashy sofa in front of a roaring fire at the Old Bell in Malmesbury, I made an impulse purchase of one of their gift vouchers for a "Cream Tea for Two".  We will give this to whoever books a weekend break at The Stables at The Rookery from Friday 15th to Monday 18th March.  This is our only weekend break available before Easter, so book now and enjoy a cream tea with our compliments!

Award-winning cakes... and a mention in the press!

It's been an exciting week here at The Rookery.  Last weekend, as part of Malmesbury's Carnival celebrations, the town's annual Garden Club Show took place, with entries of fruit, vegetables, artwork, baking and the ever-popular children's crafts.  Having won first prize in the Fruit Cake and Victoria Sponge Cake categories for the past three years, I was keen to hold onto my title, and this year decided to go all out and enter every category in the Baking section.  I came away with first prizes for my fruit cake, Victoria sponge cake, sausage rolls and assorted canapes, and second prizes for shortbread, decorated cupcakes and lemon meringue pie.  I was also the overall winner of the baking section, and brought home a very nice trophy for my efforts!  We are very proud of our delicious welcome trays at The Stables at The Rookery, so you can be sure that some of these recipes will be making their way into the cottage for guests to enjoy very soon.

Further excitement this weekend when we realised that we had a mention in the October edition of Country Homes and Interiors Magazine - in their "Postcard from Malmesbury", where we are the recommended self-catering cottage for a stay in our lovely town.  The next couple of months are already looking very busy at The Stables - and with the Autumn Colours at nearby Westonbirt Arboretum about to begin, this is the perfect time to visit Malmesbury and the Cotswolds.
